    The Overtime Pay Formula
    Under the FLSA, overtime is paid at 1.5x the regular hourly rate for every hour worked beyond 40 in a workweek.

    Overtime Pay = Hourly Rate × 1.5 × Overtime Hours

    Total Gross Pay = Regular Pay + Overtime Pay

    Step-by-Step Calculation

    1. 1Find your regular hourly rate. If you are salaried, divide your weekly salary by 40 to get the equivalent hourly rate.
    2. 2Count your overtime hours. Subtract 40 from total weekly hours worked. The result is your overtime hours.
    3. 3Calculate overtime pay. Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5, then multiply by the number of overtime hours.
    4. 4Add regular and overtime pay. Regular pay (40 hrs × hourly rate) plus overtime pay equals your total gross pay for the week.

    Worked Example

    Employee earns $20/hour and works 45 hours in a week.

    Regular pay (40 hrs × $20)$800.00
    Overtime pay (5 hrs × $20 × 1.5)$150.00
    Total gross pay$950.00

    Double Time (2x) – California Daily Overtime

    California requires double time (2x the regular rate) for hours worked beyond 12 in a single day, and beyond 8 hours on the 7th consecutive workday. Using the same $20/hour example, any hours past 12 in one day would pay $40/hour instead of $30.
