Slope adjustment
Roof surface area is always larger than the building footprint because slope adds coverage. Multiply the footprint length by width to get base area, then multiply by the pitch multiplier for your roof slope — a 6/12 pitch multiplier is 1.118, so a 40x30 ft footprint (1,200 sq ft) has a true roof area of about 1,342 sq ft. Use that sloped area for all material estimates.
If you already have roof surface area from a drone measurement or contractor report, choose the "Total Roof Area" mode and enter the figure directly — the pitch multiplier is skipped automatically.
Divide the adjusted roof area (after waste) by 33.3 sq ft to get the bundle count. Most asphalt shingle projects add 10-15% waste for cuts around valleys, hips, and penetrations. For a 1,500 sq ft roof with 10% waste, the adjusted area is 1,650 sq ft — that equals 50 bundles. Complex roofs with multiple hips and dormers should use 15% waste.
Standard felt underlayment covers approximately 400 sq ft per roll; synthetic underlayment covers 1,000 sq ft per roll. This calculator uses the coverage rate you enter, so change it to match your product. For a detailed cost breakdown across all materials, plug quantities into the Cost Calculator and compare vendor quotes.
Asphalt shingle material runs $100-$350 per roofing square depending on grade — three-tab at the low end, architectural/dimensional in the middle, and designer laminate shingles at the top. Enter your price per bundle and the calculator converts that to a total material cost. Prices vary by region and season, so confirm with local suppliers. If you need to price a job for a client, build margin targets with the Margin Calculator before sending bids.
Use the Quote Calculator to add labor, overhead, disposal, and margin for a complete project bid. Material cost is typically 40-50% of total installed cost; labor and overhead account for the rest.
Roofs with multiple pitches, dormers, skylights, or unusual geometry should be verified by a licensed roofing contractor. A small measurement error — even 5% — on a large roof can mean 5-10 bundles short, which can delay completion by days if materials are backordered.
Always follow manufacturer specifications and local building codes for underlayment type, ice-and-water shield requirements, flashing, and ventilation. Many warranties are voided by improper installation regardless of material quantity.
